1 Purpose

1.1 Background

Lundinova AB is a Lund based company that is into hardware, embedded software design and

project management. The company has a wealth of experience derived from the development

of hundreds of new products. Lundinova intends to develop a new product, an E-Book Reader

(EBR), and as such a master thesis is offered.

The master thesis is split into the following parts:

• Make a survey of different technologies regarding reflective displays i.e. E-paper.

• Make a survey of existing Electronic-Book-Reader products.

• Choose a suitable display platform.

• Build an Electronic-Book-Reader Demo.

1.2 Goals

The goal of this project is to develop a demo version of the Electronic-Book-Reader (EBR).

Systematic approach to product development is applied in the whole process, from

identification and development of use cases, collaboration diagrams, sequence diagram, and

finally building a prototype. Much emphasis is placed on the usability of the product, in other

words it should be user friendly to all, including non-technical users.

1.3 Scope

The time frame of the thesis project is limited hence only the basic functionalities will be

implemented in the EBR prototype. For robustness additional features shall be added later by

Lundinova.

1.4 This Report

The chapters of the report are structurally tailored according to the questions posed above.

The chapter 2 explores the world of reflective displays and E-papers in general, and reveals

all the technologies currently available to electronic product manufacturers. In chapter 3 an

in-depth investigation was done regarding E-paper based E-Book-Readers (EBR) that are

currently available in the consumer electronic market. The middle chapters discuss theories

and, also applied system-engineering tools to design the E-Book-Reader. In chapters 6 and 7

implementation and hardware description is discussed. The results of the thesis are divulged

in chapter 8. The Appendixes contain diagrams, designs and information that were also made

during the thesis. Explanations of abbreviations and acronyms are available in the glossary

entries.
